California Coastal Alliance

The California Coastal Alliance (CCA) is a growing coalition of environmental leaders, surf associations, grassroots organizations, scientists, and coastal communities working together to protect and restore California’s coastline. We are driven by a simple but powerful belief: when we act together, we can protect what we love.

Join Us

By joining the California Coastal Alliance, you become part of a broader community that turns first-hand coastal knowledge into data-driven advocacy, public engagement, and systemic change.

Our Activities

We offer a variety of activities and events for our members, including volunteer opportunities, social gatherings, and educational workshops. Our goal is to provide something for everyone and create a sense of belonging for all.

Our Purpose

Why Join Now: A Historic Parallel

Why Join Now: A Historic Parallel

Rapid Mobilization: Build a dynamic, statewide response network ready to act when coastal threats arise.

Shared Resources: Leverage scientific data, policy expertise, community knowledge, and public outreach tools to strengthen local efforts.

Unified Advocacy: Amplify our collective voice to influence policy at the local, state, and federal levels.

Stewardship & Education: Promote coastal literacy through public education, community science, and hands-on stewardship.

Why Join Now: A Historic Parallel

Southern California has a proud legacy of coastal defense—from the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill that sparked the modern environmental movement, to the 2021 Orange County pipeline spill, which devastated marine ecosystems and closed surf breaks.

These events galvanized communities like Huntington Beach, Newport, and Laguna to advocate for stronger protections, bans on offshore drilling, and greater transparency from polluters and agencies. That same spirit of local action and collective pressure is what we’re building statewide.

As one city councilmember recently told me: “If you don’t have the money, get the people.”

People power can change policy, and surfers have always been at the forefront of ocean activism.

How it Works

How Your Organization Benefits From Joining

How Your Organization Benefits From Joining

Membership in the California Coastal Alliance offers meaningful, immediate value:

Collective Support When It Matters Most: If an issue arises that you and your coastal community needs to confront—whether it’s mobilizing community response, engaging elected officials, or rallying for or against a specific policy—the Alliance can step in to support. That includes boosting turnout at events, organizing email and letter-writing campaigns, gathering petition signatures, and showing up in force at city council meetings.

Real-Time Alerts & Coastal Updates: Stay informed with timely environmental alerts and campaign updates specifically relevant to your coastline and waters.

Strategic Influence: As a member, you will have a representative on the Alliance’s Advisory Board, helping shape campaigns, priorities, and collective action.

Scientific & Advocacy Collaboration: Work alongside environmental scientists, policy advocates, and public agencies to strengthen local initiatives and support evidence-based solutions.

Amplification of Your Voice: Your work, events, and messages gain wider reach through the Alliance’s communication networks and member organizations.

Community Engagement Opportunities: Gain opportunities to co-host coastal cleanups, awareness campaigns, and educational events that deepen ties with the broader community.

How Participation Works

How Your Organization Benefits From Joining

How Your Organization Benefits From Joining

Joining the California Coastal Alliance does not mean you’re expected to participate in every campaign or support every position.

Each member organization retains full autonomy. If a particular petition or advocacy effort doesn’t align with your values or priorities, your organization simply doesn’t engage. No action is required, and there is no obligation to endorse causes that don’t reflect your mission.

In fact, open dialogue and mutual respect are foundational to our alliance. If a partner organization strongly opposes a proposed campaign, that perspective will be carefully considered before the Alliance moves forward. We strive for consensus, not conformity.

Each organization can designate a representative to serve on the Coastal Alliance Advisory Board, helping guide the Alliance’s direction, share local insights, and vote on collective actions.

When public letters or petitions are released, only the organizations that explicitly sign on will be listed.

This ensures:
- No blanket endorsements
- No misrepresentation
- No assumptions of support where it doesn’t exist

Every position statement will include a signature block or acknowledgment from the organizations who choose to stand behind that particular effort. This structure protects the independence of each member while amplifying the collective strength of those aligned on a given issue.
